Chapter Ⅰ Introduction


1.1 Background of the Research

The British linguist D.A. Wilkins mentioned in his book Linguistics in LanguageTeaching (1972) “without Grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabularynothing can be conveyed”. The linguist Jeremy Harmer (1991) once said that “Vocabularyprovides very important organ and flesh for a language”. Nation (2001) suggests thatvocabulary is the basis of every sentence. These illustrate the importance of vocabularylearning and also indicate that we should attach great importance to vocabulary acquisition,especially for those students who learn English as a second language.

However, In traditional vocabulary teaching, teachers can’t teach in a more flexibleand creative way because they have to deal with the increasing test pressure. The job ofteacher in the process of vocabulary acquisition is to teach them the pronunciation andusages of new words and give them a few tests to monitor. Therefore, the tough work ofvocabulary acquisition is left on students alone. Students learn vocabulary in a veryinflexible way. They memorize words by mechanical repetition and don’t know when andhow to use them properly in different contexts. That’s why they often forget the words orphrases they have memorized soon. And they gradually lose their interest in Englishlearning.

Based on the combination of mobile technology and Education, mobile learning hasgradually become a significant part of people's learning life. It has rich learning resourcesand is suitable for different levels of learners. In addition, it is not limited by time andplace. Therefore, it is regarded as a supplement to formal education. With the developmentof network technology and the popularity of smart phones, a variety of new vocabularylearning apps emerged, such as BCZ App, Scallop App, etc, which may make a differenceto the students’ English vocabulary learning if used properly.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research

Along with the rapid application of computer network technology in education,mobile-learning as a new learning model came into being. It is of great significance toexplore the future of mobile learning in the field of education and to understand the currentsituation and practical needs of mobile learning technology. Besides, for high schoolstudents who are faced with heavy pressure from the exams, how to remember andskillfully use so many words has become a real headache for them. Even some studentslose heart and give up learning English. Designed to help English learners to learnvocabulary and arouse their interest in learning English, vocabulary learning apps maybecome a competent assistant. Consequently, the research combines mobile learning andEnglish vocabulary learning and selects high school students as the research subject in thehope of enriching the existing theoretical and practical research results of the application ofmobile learning based on smart phones in high school English learning and providingreference for other researchers.
